Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Watch Review

Written by admin on March 27, 2010 – 5:26 pm -

Blancpain Fifty Fathoms diver watches constitute the apex of the company's Sports Collection. Fifty Fathoms timepieces combine technologically advanced movement (Calibre 1315) with a leaner, more restrained design than the testosterone-pumped Speed Command and Air Command. Yet despite shedding some “muscle mass”, the collection displays unmistakable masculine character – only instead of a body-builder's physique, the watches show off a swimmer's body, as appropriate for a diver watch. Fifty Fathoms include a women's line, which abandons the deep black in favor of a more mellow mother-of-pearl (also appropriately found in the sea) off-white palette. All Fifty Fathoms watches include a unidirectional rotating bezel (to prevent it from... more

Top Watches Revealed At BaselWorld 2010

Written by admin on March 25, 2010 – 4:00 am -

NO.1 - HUBLOT CLASSIC FUSION The last decade saw a major rebirth of Hublot under the leadership of the charismatic Jean-Claude Biver. Circa 2004, the Big Bang was released and it hit the market like a sledgehammer. Since then, the onslaught of limited and unlimited editions has thrust the Big Bang forcefully into the collective psyche of the watch world, such that what was the invigorating and unique design of the Big Bang is oddly enough now a classic. Chalk it up to the genius of Mr. Biver at the helm of the Hublot ship, but that is how a classic is made with haste. Now, the brand strips down the look for a thinner, more elegant watch known as... more

A Guide to Buying Vintage Watches

Written by admin on March 20, 2010 – 9:57 pm -

A Collector's Guide to Buying Vintage Watches Collecting vintage watches is a growing hobby in most parts of the western world. Men, particularly, are attracted by the romance and novelty of having a micro-engine on their wrist as both a time-teller and an image statement. One of the most frustrating aspects of collecting vintage watches is the number of fakes, frankenwatches and fraudsters one encounters in pursuit of this noble, but increasingly costly, passion. The comeback of the mechanical watch has drawn out all sorts of insects from under their rocks. The pursuit of one's passion for old timepieces will inevitably lead to numerous encounters with rogue repairers who charge house prices for inferior work, linear decendents of horse thieves... more

Things to Consider When Choosing a Luxury Watch

Written by admin on March 7, 2010 – 9:44 pm -

By Joe Thompson SPLURGE OR NOT? Luxury watches range from just under $1,000 to $100,000 and more. Among the most expensive are the prized tourbillions, which only an elite group of master watchmakers has the skills to produce. (The two-hundred-year-old mechanism consists of a revolving carriage that holds the balance wheel and escapement and makes a complete turn every sixty seconds to average out timekeeping errors caused by gravity.) A watch is inevitably a status symbol, and it's up to you to figure out what kind of status you want to symbolize. If you're really serious, luxury watchmakers are ready to accommodate. ROSE, WHITE, OR YELLOW GOLD? The tint of a piece of gold depends on the proportion of copper and silver mixed in with the pure... more

Breguet Classique Grande Complication 5347 Twin Rotating Tourbillon

Written by admin on March 3, 2010 – 6:14 am -

Exactly three years after the original Twin Rotating Tourbillon’s launch, Breguet offers a follow-up to the highly sought-after model featuring a pair of tourbillons on its silvered dial. This time, the watch comes in a case made of rose gold instead of platinum, but it still retails at a price of a Bentley limmo. Just like the original model, the Breguet Classique Grande Complication 5347 Twin Rotating Tourbillon watch features a hand-wound mechanical movement with a pair of tourbillons traveling around its dial. Coupled by a differential gear, the little turbines balance each other, doubling the watch’s accuracy. The tourbillons rotate at a speed of one revolution per 12 hours so that their connecting bridge can act as an hour hand. It... more
