A. Lange und Söhne call it the new benchmark in chronograph design and we think they are absolutely right. The new Datograph Auf/Ab sets the bar at a new level and the improvements go beyond adding a power reserve indicator.
According to many collectors the normal A. Lange and Sohne Datograph was already one of the most desirable chronographs ever made, only surpassed by it’s bigger brother the Lange und Söhne Double Split. Will the new A. Lange and Sohne Datograph Auf/Ab bring a change in that hierarchy?

Let’s look at what’s been changed/improved.
First of all the case size has increased from 39 mm to 41 mm. Something that might seem like ‘almost nothing’ is a big change for A. Lange und Söhne because they usually keep diameters at a moderate, almost old fashioned, size of less than 40 mm. While we at Monochrome prefer such ideas about the diameter of a watch, many watch aficionados usually don’t. I say ‘usually’ because I’ve never heard any complaints about the diameter of the Datograph (or Lange 1), not even from the most hardcore Panerai fan. It looks like A. Lange und Söhne is the exception. Still I believe most collectors won’t mind that Lange und Söhne decided to increase the diameter by 2 millimeter.

Another change, which is related to the increased diameter, is the slightly larger date aperture. A. Lange und Söhne wanted to keep the proportions the same as on the Datograph, so they increased the date aperture with 4%. That’s what I call attention for detail!

On the dial we can see another change, which is the absence of the Roman numerals II, VI, and X. Since the ‘Saxonia family’ got a small make-over last year, the new stick markers on the dial of the Datograph Auf/Ab is now coherent with the rest of the family.

The change that gave the new A. Lange and Sohne Datograph its name is the power reserve indicator, which might refer to the old 1815 Auf/Ab. The power reserve indicator is positioned at 6 o’clock and is a very pleasant function on a manually wound watch. Not visible on the dial, yet another improvement, is that the A. Lange and Sohne Datograph Auf/Ab now has 60 hours of autonomy when fully wound. This means an increased power reserve of 24 extra hours, compared to the normal Datograph. Only when the hand enters the red zone on the third day will it be necessary to supply the movement with new energy. The 24 extra power-reserve hours were achieved mainly with a larger mainspring barrel.

When it was first presented in 1999, the A. Lange & Söhne Datograph attracted attention for its classic column-wheel movement with a precisely jumping minute counter and flyback function. This jumping minute counter makes it easy to read the elapsed time, when the chronograph is stopped.

This mechanism was used in earlier times, especially in pocket watches and high-quality wristwatches. Lange und Söhne has improved this mechanism and was granted a patent for an adjustable operating lever. The video below shows how it works.
The Datograph Auf/Ab aso features a Flyback function, which allows the chronograph to be instantaneously reset to zero during an ongoing measurement, simply by pressing a pusher. Originating from the early days of aviation, this mechanism makes it possible to perform instantly consecutive time measurements by combining three steps – stop, reset, restart – into one: one single push of a button will stop and reset the Datograph Auf/Ab in the middle of an ongoing time measurement. When the button is released, a new time measurement is initiated immediately.

Technically it’s all mighty impressive! Actually like we are used to from this beautiful German watch manufacture. But the question whether the new Datograph Auf/Ab will distrub the reign of the Double Split, might boil down to how collectors value the design of the movement.

The movement, caliber L951.6, which can be seen trough the sapphire case back, has a classical frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour. This assures optimised rate values. It is powered by a balance spring, also developed and crafted on site by Lange. The manually wound movement is crafted to the Lange quality standards and is decorated and assembled by hand. The plates and bridges are made of untreated German silver and, typical for A. Lange und Söhne, the balance cock is engraved by hand.
Also beautifully visible is the column wheel that controls the chronograph functions, four screwed gold chatons and the levers of the flyback function. A true visual treat!

The original Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso was produced in 1931 for British polo players stationed in India. The elite group wanted a watch they could wear while playing the game without too much risk of damage. At the time watch crystals were mostly glass and were relatively fragile. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso case was designed to flip over and reveal a polished piece of solid metal to protect the crystal on the other side. The flipping case mechanism has of course been modernized a bit, but retains the same basic system as developed about 80 years ago. Last year Jaeger-LeCoultre fervently celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Reverso which involved the release of many new models, limited editions, and a closer look at the heritage of the watch. For review I had the pleasure of checking out one of the newer pieces - the Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface (also sometimes just called "Duo") timepiece (ref. Q374.24.21).

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso comes in a range of sizes and style. The largest of modern watches are the super-sized Reverso cases in Jaeger-LeCoultre's highest end models such as the Gyrotourbillon II and the Triptyque. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso is a step down from that. The more square Squadra is a handsome sporty option as well. Then there are smaller men's versions as well as a few sizes for the ladies. The Grande Reverso case is 32.15mm wide and about 52mm tall. That length of the case prevents it from looking small. I would not say that the piece wears large, but it certainly doesn't feel petite. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso is a super classic look. Those three horizontal lines in the case above and below the dial really make it look distinctive, and the overall look and feel of the piece is ultra-classy. No where will a Reverso look out of place.
The case flipping function is slick and well-engineered. Hell, the brand did have 80 years to work on it. There are spring-loaded ball bearings that help it move easily and snap securely into place. Originally the Reverso has a plain metal caseback. Jaeger-LeCoultre early-on realized that this space was useful for custom engravings, enamel paintings, etc... Today for example there is a special Reverso website where you can customize your own and Jaeger-LeCoultre will make it for you. The brand also realized that if they created complex movements, the watch could have two dials. This Duoface is a perfect example of one of those pieces.
In this case Jaeger-LeCoultre decided to use each side as a different time zone. So this is a nice two timezone watch with the date. The idea is that you just flip over the watch to see the time zone elsewhere. One side has the time with subsidiary seconds dial and an open-date indicator. The other side has another time zone with a day/night indicator. That latter side would be use for what is often referred to as "home time." It makes for a useful travel watch, and as a benefit each side is aesthetically different giving you the option to "wear it light or dark."
Each dial is very much reminiscent of the Reverso's historical look. The brand is careful to ensure that detailing is impressive by giving the dials machine engraving and crisp printing. The black colored dial also has luminant for night viewing. The best part is that the overall Reverso look is not only highly art deco in style, but also very legible and useful. It is hard to not be a Reverso fan. The design is timeless, looks good on most people, and even after all this time the flipping case concept is still fun. Others have tried to replicate the idea of a double sided watch, but no one does it better than JLC.
This particular Grande Reverso Duoface watch has an 18k rose gold case. There are steel versions as well but I have to say that gold suits the Reverso very well. I know there are 18k white gold versions, but you might as well just get a steel one at that point. If you go gold, go rose or pink gold for a case like this. The color looks great with both the silvered and black colored dials. The blued steel hands on the silvered dial are classic - and Jaeger-LeCoultre even flame blues their hands in-house.
The majority of Reverso movements are manually wound. This has a lot to do with the space and style of the movement. Though there are a few automatic Reverso watches around. Jaeger-LeCoultre of course makes all of their own movements. The shame in a watch like this is that you can't see the movement. Even opening up the case is something that only an expert should do. That makes sense as there are hands on both sides. For those wanting a more "pure" horological experience there are watches in the Grande Reverso range very similar to this piece that have an exhibition style caseback on the second dial side of the watch.
Inside this Grande Reverso Duoface is a Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 986 manually wound movement. All features are controlled via the crown and it has a power reserve of about 48 hours. It is a slick movement and all I could have asked for in addition to the existing features would be a power reserve indicator. For me, I really like it when manually wound movements have those. Price for this excellent Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duoface watch is $19,300 in 18k rose gold and about $10,200 in steel. It is a classic, and an easy decision to own.

Rose gold experienced a wave of popularity during the 1940s, when pure gold was more difficult to come by. Postwar, watchmakers and jewelry designers reverted back to traditional yellow and white gold as the mainstays. For purely stylistic reasons, however, the last decade has seen a shift back toward the copper-infused alloys.

Rarity, complexity and condition make all the difference when looking for a luxury watch. But while there are major gains to be made, it takes a good eye to know the difference between a clever investment, and a waste of time.

In such a vast and specialist industry where prices range from $1,500 into the millions, it’s difficult to know where to start. Or if you should invest at all given the global climate. Before checking Love Money for advice on monetary spending, remember that the prospective investor can head to auction to find some of the most lucrative deals on luxury time pieces.

Geoffroy Ader of Sotheby’s says demand is highest for the best known names. "Most demands are based on the brands …the two ‘star’ brands are Rolex and Patek Philippe," Ader told CNBC.

Alfredo Paramico, fund manager at Precious Times which invests in luxury and rare time pieces, agreed that name is everything in this glamorous market.
Paramico brought three of the most exclusive watches in his collection – with a combined value of $40 million - into the CNBC studio.

"Here we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to have all together these three wrist watches, that are probably three of the most important watches in history ever," he said, displaying the platinum and white gold Patek Philippe.

Explaining the story and history behind each watch, Paramico showed that time pieces – just like luxury jewellery, antiques or wine – have a provenance which forms part of the value of the item.

The 18 carat white gold Patek Philippe he brought with him had sold in 1995 for 400,000 Swiss francs ($430,000). By 2010, its value had hit over 3.2 million ($3.47 million).

Heading to an established antique dealer is one way to source a watch with a proven history and origin. George Somlo of Somlo Antiques in London explained that investing in the right vintage watch is a good bet for troubled financial times.
"We’ve had many recessions over the past forty years, none of them quite like this one, but buying antique or vintage wristwatches and pocket watches has always been a very solid investment," Somlo said.

With Swiss watch exports up 19 percent in the first six months of the year, reaching $9 billion, the most significant demand has come from Asia.

Alan Walker, of technology consultancy Capgemini told CNBC that watch investment was on the up: "within the investments of passion category, it’s about 22 percent for jewellery, watches and gems.
"What we really noticed last year is exponential growth in Asia, in particular mainland China and Hong Kong, so that’s where the growth is coming from at the moment…we are seeing record returns."

Although an unusual investment, watch-buying can be more than just a hobby for the super rich; you don’t have to be a big spender to get into this market.

"It’s not a question of how much you can invest," said Paramico, "I think it’s important that you buy a watch which is in very good condition and is totally original, even if it’s a $2,000 watch. Quality is a key issue in this business, approximation is definitely forbidden."

He advised to look at the brand; even with contemporary watches, a good, established name will hold its value.
Paramico also gave his hint for a smart watch investment. For $5,000, he said a rose gold 1940 Patek Philippe with a square case is a good bet for the future.

It features the Omega 3606 caliber automatic movement, which has been certified as a chronometer by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Control). Only 3 percent of watches produced in Switzerland are "chronometer-certified." To achieve this highly coveted certification, the movements are subjected to numerous tests over a period of 15 consecutive days and nights, in five positions and at three different temperatures. The watch also includes a central chronograph hand with 30-minute and 12-hour subdial totalizers, 24-hour subdial, and day and month windows. The large, round watch measures 39mm wide (1.54 inches) and 15mm thick (0.59 inches), and it's topped by a blue-plated bezel with tachymeter readings. The blue dial background has a circular Geneva wave pattern, luminous silver-tone hands, luminous tipped stick hour markers, and small second indexes. It's completed by a silver stainless steel link bracelet band that offers polished highlights, which is joined by a secure, push-button clasp. Automatic Watch Movement An automatic watch is self-winding, and its movement has a reserve that must be at least partially filled prior to being worn. This is done by shaking and winding the timepiece manually. In order for an automatic timepiece to keep a reserve, it must be worn daily for 8 hours of active wear. Each new Omega movement is tested on the wrist in existing Omega models, while various laboratory tests are conducted to determine temperature-resistance, shock-resistance and vibration-resistance.
