Longines Sports Legends Watches
Written by admin on December 19, 2009 – 4:48 am -Sports Legends: Timepieces that have gone down in history thanks to their performance The Sports Legends line includes contemporary versions or updated models of exceptional watches that Longines has produced over the years. The link between the brand and the world of aviation, then in the first flush of development, led to the creation of watches that have since become legendary, such as the famous Lindbergh Hour Angle watch, based on a design by the American aviator Charles Lindbergh, who was the first man to fly non-stop across the North Atlantic, namely in his aircraft the Spirit of St. Louis. Lindbergh’s Atlantic Voyage watch, created specially for the long trip Lindbergh made with his wife around the coast of the North Atlantic (47,000... more

Harry Winston – A Brand New Opus
Written by admin on December 16, 2009 – 5:41 pm -One of the highlights of this year’s Baselworld 2009 was the introduction of Harry Winston’s Opus 9 wristwatch, a quantum leap in haute horology that began with the release of the original Opus 1 in 2001. The Opus collection is an annual collaboration between the Winston brand and the finest independent watchmakers available. Each year, brilliant horological minds collaborate on a unique design that pushes the envelope of expectations for these eclectic timepieces of distinction. This year’s contribution to the Opus legacy features a square-face white gold case that houses two parallel baguette diamond chains set on either side of a silver monogrammed bridge. Its self-winding movement has a power reserve of 72 hours and the watch is water... more

Astronauts wear Omega on the moon
Written by admin on December 6, 2009 – 3:25 am -How to tell one astronaut from another Buzz Aldrin may have been only the second man to walk on the moon, but he was the first to wear a watch on its surface. In 1962 NASA visited a jewelry shop in Houston, bought some timepieces, and subjected them to what agency historians describe as ‘exhaustive tests aimed at determining performance reliability in the conditions likely to be experienced during EVA’. That acronym stands for ‘extravehicular activity’, which means moon walking, which means temperatures ranging from -250 to +250ºF. The agency also exposed the watches to ‘accelerations of 12gs’ and the violent shaking of a ‘vibration table’. The only one to survive was the Omega Speedmaster. Despite congressional pressure to... more

Breitling Superocean Heritage
Written by admin on November 9, 2009 – 7:03 pm -The Breitling Superocean line has been around for a while. Over 50 years in fact, in various iterations. However, most of the recent models have been a bit boring for my tastes. Yes, they make excellent diving watches, but I need a little more style on my wrist. Well, I was quite delighted to see Breitling's Superocean Heritage line released. The watches look great, with clean classic lines that are as functional as they are symmetric. Best of all, don't confuse the "Heritage" nominer as any indication that these watches are not modern in everyday. The only thing "old" about these watches is the minimalist look of the face, and the optional metal bracelet. The are done in a retro style, but in terms of function and a size, there are modern... more

Vintage Watches: Aged to Perfection
Written by admin on October 29, 2009 – 6:41 pm -What you should know about buying vintage If you want a timepiece with stand-out style—or just one that no one else can get—think vintage. But in watchspeak, vintage means more than just cool-looking or rare. Edward Faber, owner of New York vintage retailer Aaron Faber Gallery, uses the term to define collectible watches made between 1935 (roughly when Swiss technological improvements like shockproofing were invented) and 1985 (when CAD/CAM, a computer system that factored out the watchmaker’s hand, became the manufacturing standard). Whether you’re buying a $500 Hamilton or a $50,000 Patek Philippe, you’re making an investment—one that could pay off significantly over time. Here, Edward Faber, owner of New York vintage retailer... more

Vacheron Constantin Kallania awarded best High Jewelery watch in Vogue Jewels Awards 2009
Written by admin on October 7, 2009 – 8:48 pm -At the Vogue Jewels Awards 2009 in Madrid Spain, the exceptional haute joaillerie ladies timepiece "Kallania" from Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin claimed the prize in the Best Jewellery Watch category. The Kallania, debuted by Vacheron Constantin at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) exhibition in January of this year, is already considered a spiritual successor of the venerable brand's mythic Kallista diamond watch--a unique creation of the gem-setters art introduced thirty years ago which quickly established itself as the world's most expensive wristwatch. The cuff-styled Vacheron Constantin Kallania, crafted entirely from 18-karat white gold displays a glorious canvas of 186 bead-set emerald cut diamonds across... more

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Rubens Barrichello II
Written by admin on September 30, 2009 – 3:42 am -From a design standpoint I consider this watch to be the pre-cursor of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Survivor watch. Look at the two watches adn you will agree that this Rubens Barrichello II limited edition watch has design cues that made their way into the Surviror watch a few years late. Not exactly the same looks, but part of the same breed. These include the hands, dial design, light vertical texturing (see the strap links here) as well as the crown and pusher design. The pictured watch was part way "there" and then Audemars Piguet just went the distance with the Survivor. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Rubens Barrichello II watch was made in honor of the namesake Brazilian Formula 1 race car driver. For some reason Brazilian... more
